Featherweight in MMA is contested at 145 pounds (65.8 kilograms) and has been one of the most marketable divisions in the sport for over a decade. The UFC, PFL, ONE Championship, and Bellator (now under PFL) all run a featherweight division, and the title has been held by some of the biggest box-office stars in MMA history.
The UFC's featherweight lineage begins with the WEC, where José Aldo built a dominant reign before becoming the first UFC featherweight champion in 2010. Aldo defended the belt seven times before Conor McGregor's 13-second knockout in 2015 reshaped the division's history. The post-Aldo era has been defined by Max Holloway, whose volume striking set output records, and by Alexander Volkanovski, whose three reigns and trilogy with Holloway are widely seen as a high point in technical MMA. Ilia Topuria knocked Volkanovski out in 2024 and inherited the belt before vacating to move up to lightweight, opening the door for a new generation.
Other notable champions include Frankie Edgar (briefly an interim title contender after dropping down from lightweight), Renan Barão (in the WEC), and Patricio "Pitbull" Freire, who held the Bellator featherweight title across two reigns and is one of the most accomplished non-UFC fighters of his era. In ONE Championship, Tang Kai and Thanh Le have been key figures, with the title moving back and forth.
Record-wise, José Aldo's seven consecutive title defenses (combining his WEC and UFC reigns to ten if you count both) remains a landmark. Max Holloway holds multiple UFC striking records, including most significant strikes landed in a single fight, and Conor McGregor's 13-second knockout of Aldo is the fastest finish in a UFC featherweight title fight.
Style-wise, featherweight is a sweet spot for athletic finishers. The class is heavy enough to produce real knockout power but light enough to maintain ferocious cardio over 25 minutes. Wrestling, kickboxing, and jiu-jitsu are all viable as primary skills, but every contender needs functional ability in all three. Volume striking, like Holloway's, tends to define the division's modern identity, but counter punchers (Volkanovski) and pressure knockout artists (Topuria) have all reached the top.
Crossover to other rulesets is significant for featherweight, because it is one of the cleanest matches across disciplines. A UFC featherweight maps roughly to ONE Championship's bantamweight (145 lb, hydration tested), to professional boxing's featherweight (126 lb) only by name (the boxing frame is much smaller), and to Muay Thai stadium featherweight (57.2 kg / 126 lb), again with a frame mismatch. In practice, a UFC featherweight is closer in walking-around size to a boxing super lightweight or welterweight.
