Sambo is a Russian martial art developed in the early twentieth century by combining Judo, traditional folk wrestling styles from across the Soviet republics, and other grappling systems. The name comes from a Russian acronym meaning self-defense without weapons. There are three main formats: Sport Sambo (focused on throws and leg locks), Combat Sambo (which adds striking, including punches, kicks, knees, and elbows), and Beach Sambo (a faster outdoor version). Training Sambo feels physical and direct, with strong wrestling, dynamic throws, and a famous emphasis on leg attacks that distinguishes it from Judo. A typical class includes warm-ups, ukemi-style breakfall practice, technique instruction, drilling, and live wrestling. Combat Sambo classes add striking work and protective gear.

    Choosing a gym

Sambo is most established in Russia and the former Soviet republics, with growing communities in Eastern Europe, parts of Asia, and increasingly in Western countries. Finding a qualified instructor outside of Sambo-heavy regions can be a challenge, but the sport's international federations are working to expand availability.

Look for: a head instructor with verifiable competitive or coaching experience under a recognized federation (FIAS or a national affiliate), proper mats suitable for throwing, a clear distinction between Sport Sambo and Combat Sambo training, live wrestling as a regular part of training, a structured approach to ukemi for beginners, and a respectful and disciplined training environment.

Red flags include clubs that label themselves Sambo without verifiable lineage, schools that combine Sambo with unrelated styles without depth in any, and instructors who cannot produce credentials from a recognized federation. In Sambo, lineage matters because the sport is still rare enough that fake credentials are common. Cross-check the instructor's affiliation with a national or international Sambo federation before committing.

    Equipment you'll need

Sambo has a distinctive uniform that sets it apart from Judo and BJJ. A starter kit costs around 120 to 200 USD: a kurtka (the red or blue Sambo jacket), Sambo shorts (red or blue, matching the kurtka), Sambo wrestling shoes (samboski), a mouthguard, and a water bottle.

For Combat Sambo you will also need boxing gloves, shin guards, a headguard, and a groin protector.

What NOT to buy yet: competition-grade kurtka, weight-cutting equipment, or branded fight gear. Most clubs will help you source the correct uniform from approved suppliers, since Sambo uniforms have specific cut and color requirements.

    Your first 30 days

The first month focuses on ukemi (breakfalls), basic gripping with the kurtka, foundational throws often drawn from Judo and folk wrestling traditions, and an introduction to Sambo's signature leg-lock game. You will learn how to safely fall from various angles, the basic mechanics of off-balancing an opponent, and one or two staple throws such as the inside trip or hip throw. Leg-lock entries are introduced cautiously, since they carry real injury risk if applied carelessly.

Two to three sessions per week is a healthy starting cadence. Soreness in the back, hips, neck, and forearms is normal in the first weeks. Live wrestling is typically introduced quickly because, as in wrestling and Judo, the live work is essential to learning the sport.

If you are training Combat Sambo specifically, striking drills will be integrated alongside the grappling work, with sparring developed gradually under coach supervision.

    Common beginner mistakes

    • Treating leg locks as a quick path to wins. Leg attacks require precision and control. Tap early and learn slowly.
    • Using strength rather than off-balancing for throws. Sambo throws rely on kuzushi-like mechanics. Force without timing fails against a stronger opponent.
    • Skipping ukemi practice. Without good breakfalls, every session carries unnecessary risk.
    • Ignoring the striking side of Combat Sambo if it interests you. Many beginners specialize too early.

How long until you can compete?

Sport Sambo and Combat Sambo both have organized competition structures through FIAS and national federations. Local tournaments often welcome beginners after six to twelve months of consistent training. Regional and national-level events typically require one to two years of preparation. There is no large commercial professional Sambo circuit in most countries, but the sport has produced many notable MMA fighters, particularly from Russia and Central Asia, because the Combat Sambo skill set transfers directly to mixed martial arts. The path to international competition runs through national rankings and federation-organized tournaments.

Sambo rewards the practitioner who respects its blended heritage of throws, ground control, leg attacks, and — in the combat version — striking.
