    Omoplata: Mechanics, Setups & Common Mistakes

    How the omoplata shoulder lock from guard uses the legs to attack the shoulder, the best setups, common errors, and the grapplers who specialized in it.

    The omoplata is a shoulder lock attacked from the bottom of guard using the legs to apply the rotation instead of the arms. The name is Portuguese for "shoulder blade," and the technique is sometimes called sankaku-garami in judo. It is one of the three classic closed-guard attacks alongside the armbar and the triangle, and the position is also one of the most versatile control positions in modern jiu-jitsu.

    How it works (mechanics)

    The omoplata applies the same mechanical principle as the kimura: it rotates the opponent's arm internally behind their back to attack the shoulder joint. The difference is the lever. Where the kimura uses the attacker's two arms in a figure-four grip, the omoplata uses one of the attacker's legs draped over the back of the opponent's shoulder. The leg is a much longer and more powerful lever than the arm, which is why the omoplata can finish opponents much larger than the attacker.

    The attacker isolates one of the opponent's arms between their legs, swings the other leg over the opponent's shoulder, and sits up to a perpendicular angle while controlling the opponent's hips. As the hips of the attacker rotate, the captured arm is forced behind the opponent's back, attacking the shoulder joint in the same direction as a kimura.

    The critical mechanical detail is hip control. If the opponent can roll forward over their captured shoulder, the lock dissipates harmlessly and the attacker often ends up in a poor position. The attacker must trap the opponent's hips, either by gripping the belt and pant in the gi or by hugging around the waist and posting on the far hip in no-gi, before sitting up to apply the rotation.

    When to use it (setups)

    The omoplata is the natural punishment for an opponent who reaches one arm across the centerline of the guard, the same trigger that creates the armbar and triangle. It is especially powerful when the opponent defends a triangle attempt by reaching inside to push the knee away, because the reaching arm walks directly into omoplata position.

    It also appears off open-guard sweeps, spider guard, and lasso guard in the gi, where the attacker's leg is already on the opponent's shoulder. Modern competitors like the Mendes brothers and Clark Gracie have built systems in which the omoplata is not just a finish but a sweep, a back-take, and a transition to other submissions.

    Common errors

    • Trying to finish the lock before securing the opponent's hips, which allows them to forward roll out of the position.
    • Sitting up parallel to the opponent instead of perpendicular, which removes the rotational angle needed to attack the shoulder.
    • Letting the captured arm slip out under the leg because the knee was not pinched down on the shoulder.
    • Crossing the feet over the head while sitting up, which traps the attacker's own ankle and prevents the rotation.

    Variations

    The omoplata can be attacked from closed guard, spider guard, lasso guard, de la Riva, single-leg X, and from rolling positions in scrambles. The reverse omoplata, the rolling omoplata, and the omoplata sweep are all common modern variations. Clark Gracie's signature omoplata system uses the position as a constant control from which sweeps, back takes, and the finish itself all become available. In no-gi, the position is often used more as a sweep and back-take threat than as a finishing submission.

    Clark Gracie is the modern grappler most identified with the omoplata, building a competitive career around the position and finishing world-class opponents with it. Nino Schembri popularized the dynamic, rolling style of omoplata attacks in the 1990s and 2000s. In the modern era, the Mendes brothers and Caio Terra have all used the omoplata extensively as both a submission and a positional control.

    Why does my opponent always roll out of my omoplata?

    Because their hips are not controlled. The omoplata only works as a finish when the opponent cannot forward roll over their trapped shoulder. The moment you sit up, you must trap the opponent's hips, either with a belt grip in the gi, a body lock around the waist, or a strong post on the far hip. A common technique is to crawl your hand under their belly to the far hip, then sit up while pulling that hip toward you. Without that hip control, even a perfectly set omoplata becomes a forward roll and a guard pass for your opponent.

    Is the omoplata more useful as a submission or as a sweep?

    At lower levels it finishes frequently as a submission, but at higher levels it is more often used as a control position from which sweeps, back takes, and other submissions become available. A defended omoplata leaves the attacker in a strong position with the opponent's shoulder still trapped, which opens up sweeps to mount, transitions to the back, and follow-up submissions like the armbar or triangle. Many modern competitors hunt the omoplata grip primarily as a control rather than as a finish, treating any actual submission as a bonus when it appears.
