    Over Worstelen

Wrestling is the oldest organised combat sport in the world, with cave paintings and tomb reliefs documenting structured matches more than four thousand years ago in Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece. It was contested at the ancient Olympic Games from 708 BCE and has been part of the modern Olympic programme since the first revived Games in 1896. Today three main international styles compete under United World Wrestling: freestyle, which allows attacks on the legs and is the dominant global style; Greco-Roman, which forbids attacks below the waist and rewards upper-body throws; and women's freestyle, fully integrated into the Olympic programme since 2004. Beneath the international styles sit numerous folk traditions, from American folkstyle and British Cumberland and Westmorland to Mongolian bokh, Indian kushti, and Senegalese laamb.

The core of all wrestling styles is positional control: the ability to dictate where you and your opponent stand, kneel, or lie on the mat, and to use that control to score points for takedowns, exposures, reversals, and pins. A competitive wrestler needs explosive single-leg and double-leg entries, the hip mobility and balance to defend against the same, the grip strength and endurance to fight for tie-ups for full periods, and a level of cardiovascular conditioning that, by reputation, exceeds almost every other combat sport. Wrestling rewards hard work over almost everything else, which is why its training culture has spread well beyond the sport itself into mixed martial arts, judo, and even strongman training.

People wrestle for a range of reasons. In countries with strong school and university systems, particularly the United States, Iran, Russia, Turkey, Mongolia, and Japan, wrestling is a youth pathway that develops discipline, work ethic, and competitive resilience in ways few other activities match. Adult recreational wrestlers value the unmatched cardiovascular workout and the cognitive demand of live positional sparring. Competitors can pursue freestyle and Greco-Roman through national federations to continental, world, and Olympic level. For self-defence and mixed martial arts the ability to decide whether a fight stays standing or goes to the ground is widely considered the single most valuable skill in close-quarters combat, which is why a wrestling base is the most common foundation for MMA champions.

    Veelgestelde vragen

Am I too old to start wrestling as an adult beginner?

No, although the realistic goals shift. Adult beginners with no previous mat sport background can absolutely learn wrestling for fitness, recreational competition in age-group divisions, and as a base for mixed martial arts. The training will be physically demanding because wrestling rewards explosive power and conditioning more than most sports, and recovery takes longer with age, so build up gradually. What changes with starting later is the elite competitive ceiling: most international medallists began as children and accumulated thousands of hours of mat time before their early twenties. For everything short of that, age is not the barrier. Adult wrestling clubs and university open mats welcome beginners in most countries.

Why is wrestling such a strong base for mixed martial arts?

Because in any fight where both participants want different things, the wrestler usually decides where the fight happens. A skilled wrestler can take a striker to the ground at will, control them there, and prevent the striker from getting back up. Equally, a wrestler can keep the fight standing against a submission grappler who wants to pull guard. That binary control is more valuable than any single technique because it lets the fighter impose whichever skill set favours them on the night. Wrestling also develops a level of conditioning, mental toughness, and tolerance for being held down that few other sports match. Most MMA champions of the past two decades have had a wrestling base.

What is the difference between freestyle, Greco-Roman, and folkstyle wrestling?

Freestyle is the dominant international style outside North America, contested at the Olympics in both men's and women's divisions, and allows attacks on the legs as well as the upper body. Greco-Roman, also Olympic, forbids attacks below the waist and any use of the legs to trip or hook, which produces a sport built around upper-body throws, body locks, and high-amplitude lifts. Folkstyle, the style used in American high school and college wrestling, allows leg attacks like freestyle but scores more heavily for riding time and back exposure, and forbids some throws permitted in freestyle. Most international athletes train freestyle as their primary style and Greco as a secondary discipline if at all.
