    Triangle Choke: Mechanics, Setups & Common Mistakes

    How the closed-guard triangle uses the opponent's own shoulder to choke them, when to hunt it, common defensive errors, and the grapplers who mastered it.

    The triangle choke, or sankaku-jime, is a blood choke applied with the legs from the bottom of guard. One of the opponent's arms is left inside the legs while the other is cleared outside, and the attacker's legs close around the neck and the trapped shoulder. The opponent is effectively choked by their own shoulder pressing into one side of their neck while the attacker's thigh closes the other side.

    How it works (mechanics)

    The triangle is a blood choke, not an air choke. It works by compressing both carotid arteries on the sides of the neck, cutting off blood flow to the brain. The trapped shoulder acts as one wall of the choke and the attacker's hamstring acts as the other; the windpipe is largely irrelevant. This is why a correctly applied triangle finishes in seconds even against larger opponents.

    The geometry is unforgiving. The attacker's locking leg must cross over the ankle of the choking leg at the correct angle, so that the calf cuts diagonally across the side of the neck. If the angle is off even by a few degrees, the hamstring rests on the back of the skull or the top of the shoulder instead of the artery, and the choke becomes a holding position rather than a finish.

    The third mechanical element is angle of attack. A triangle locked straight on, with the opponent facing the attacker squarely, is almost always defensible. The attacker must rotate their hips off to one side so that the choking leg pulls the opponent's head across their body. This rotation is what loads the hamstring into the carotid and is the difference between a tap in three seconds and a defended position that lasts three minutes.

    When to use it (setups)

    The triangle appears any time an opponent leaves one arm inside the guard and one arm outside, which happens constantly during guard passing attempts, collar grips in the gi, and underhook fights in no-gi. It is the natural punishment for a passer who reaches one arm under the leg to start a stack pass or torreando.

    The technique is especially strong against opponents who posture up with one hand on the chest and one hand on the hip, and it forms a constant threat alongside the armbar and the omoplata. In MMA, the triangle is one of the highest-percentage submissions from guard because strikers naturally leave one arm extended when posturing to punch.

    Common errors

    • Locking the triangle with the head facing straight up, instead of cutting an angle toward the trapped-arm side.
    • Pulling on the head with the hands while the legs are still loose, which only feeds the opponent's posture defense.
    • Letting the trapped arm escape across the body before the lock is secured, removing the shoulder wall that makes the choke work.
    • Leaving the choking ankle exposed so the opponent can grab the foot and posture out.

    Variations

    The front triangle from guard is the original, but the same choke can be applied from mount, from S-mount, from the back as a reverse triangle, from side control, and from north-south. The mounted triangle and the inverted triangle from turtle are common in modern sport jiu-jitsu. Hand-to-shin variations, like the version taught by Roger Gracie, finish off shoulder pressure rather than head pull. The arm-in guillotine is a close cousin in concept.

    Who's known for it

    The triangle is most closely associated with Roger Gracie, who finished multiple world-championship and ADCC matches with the technique despite opponents knowing it was coming. Ryron and Rener Gracie have built much of their teaching curriculum around the position. In MMA, Anderson Silva, Demian Maia, and Fabricio Werdum have all used the triangle as a finishing weapon at the highest level.

    Why doesn't my triangle finish even when I have it locked?

    The most common cause is that you are square with your opponent instead of off-angle. A locked triangle with the head pointing straight up rests the hamstring on the back of the skull, which is uncomfortable but not a choke. Pivot your hips toward the side of the trapped arm, pull the head across your body, and curl the choking leg downward as if you are doing a one-legged sit-up. The carotid pressure should arrive immediately. A second common cause is failing to clear the trapped arm fully across your centerline, which leaves a gap between the shoulder wall and the neck.

    Is the triangle dangerous to drill with training partners?

    It is one of the safer high-percentage submissions, but it deserves respect. Because it is a blood choke, partners can lose consciousness suddenly and without the slow buildup of an air choke. Always tap early, especially as a beginner, and release immediately when your partner taps rather than holding for an extra second. The bigger long-term risk is to the attacker's knee if they wrench the lock at a bad angle, so keep the locking foot pointed and the knees squeezing rather than torquing.

    Can a much larger opponent power out of a tight triangle?

    If the choke is correctly aligned, no. The carotid arteries close under remarkably light pressure, and the attacker's hamstrings are stronger than any opponent's neck. What larger opponents can do is prevent the lock from ever closing by posturing up, stacking, or stripping the locking foot before the angle is achieved. Once a competent triangle is fully locked with the proper angle and the trapped arm across the body, size and strength stop mattering. The defense lives in the setup, not the finish.
