Mixed martial arts is the discipline of combining striking, clinch fighting, and grappling under one ruleset. Training MMA does not feel like one sport — it feels like learning several at once and slowly weaving them together. A typical session might begin with shadow boxing or movement drills, move into a takedown sequence, transition to ground positions, and finish with light sparring. Beginners are usually surprised by two things: how mentally tiring it is to keep switching ranges, and how technical the sport is. MMA is not a brawl. It is a problem-solving game played at speed, and almost every good fighter you watch has spent years drilling the basics quietly before anyone saw them on a card.

    Choosing a gym

The single most important decision a beginner makes is the gym. A good MMA gym has a qualified head coach with a verifiable competitive background, either as a fighter or as a coach of fighters who have actually competed. Lineage matters more than wall certificates.

Look for these green flags: a structured fundamentals program (not just open mat sessions), separate beginner classes or clearly marked technique classes, a written sparring policy explaining when you spar, how hard, and with whom, visible women, hobbyists, and older students (not only young male competitors), a free trial class or introductory week, and coaches who correct technique and pair you with safe partners.

Red flags include gyms that throw new students into hard sparring in the first weeks, gyms that only run children's classes with one adult session tacked on, instructors who refuse to name their teachers, and any environment where the answer to a beginner's question is mockery. A real coach explains. An insecure coach intimidates. Also be cautious of facilities that sell certifications and grading fees aggressively while showing no active competition team.

    Equipment you'll need

MMA requires more kit than most martial arts, but you do not need to buy everything in week one. A sensible starter kit costs roughly 150 to 250 USD and includes a mouthguard (boil-and-bite is fine to start), 14 or 16 oz boxing gloves for striking classes, shin guards for kickboxing rounds, hand wraps (two pairs so one can dry), a rashguard and shorts without zippers or pockets for grappling, and sandals for walking to and from the mats.

What NOT to buy yet: small MMA gloves, a custom mouthguard, headgear, or expensive branded fight gear. You will not need 4 oz gloves until you are sparring MMA rounds, which is months away. Buy good basics and replace them when they wear out.

    Your first 30 days

In the first month you will mostly learn stance, footwork, the jab, the cross, basic kicks, and the most common takedown defenses. On the ground you will learn how to stand up safely, the guard position, and a few escapes from bottom. Most beginners train two to four times a week. Three is the sweet spot: enough to progress, not so much that your joints, sleep, and motivation collapse.

Expect soreness in muscles you did not know you had — neck, forearms, hips, and the small muscles around the ribs. This fades within two to three weeks as your body adapts. Sparring should not begin in your first 30 days at a responsible gym. Light positional drilling, yes. Free sparring with strikes, no. Be patient. Sparring too early is the fastest way to develop bad habits and get hurt.

    Common beginner mistakes

    • Holding your breath. Beginners gas out not from poor cardio but from clenching. Breathe out on every strike and during grappling exchanges.
    • Going too hard in drills. Drilling is for learning, not winning. If your partner cannot complete the technique, you are training their frustration, not their skill.
    • Skipping grappling because you came for striking (or vice versa). MMA is one sport. Specializing too early leaves giant holes.
    • Comparing yourself to advanced students. They have years on you. Compare yourself only to the version of you from last month.

How long until you can compete?

For amateur MMA, most gyms want to see one to two years of consistent training before allowing a first fight, and only if the student wants it. Many never compete and that is completely valid. For those who do, a typical path is several amateur bouts spread across one to three years before turning professional. Professional MMA is a serious commitment requiring full-time training, careful coaching, and medical clearance. There is no rush. Fighters who debut prepared have longer careers than fighters who debut early.

MMA rewards patience more than talent. Show up, listen to your coach, train with curiosity rather than ego, and you will be surprised how far you go in two years.

    Veelgestelde vragen
