Kickboxing is a striking sport that combines punches and kicks under a variety of rule sets, including K-1, Dutch kickboxing, full-contact American kickboxing, and Glory rules. It sits between boxing and Muay Thai in approach — generally allowing punches and kicks but not elbows or extended clinch work, depending on the format. Training kickboxing feels energetic and athletic. A typical class warms up with skipping or shadow work, drills combinations on bags and pads, includes defensive work, and finishes with conditioning. Many gyms run technical sparring sessions for students who have built a base. Beginners often appreciate kickboxing because it offers a more athletic and rhythm-based experience than pure boxing while remaining less specialized than Muay Thai.

    Choosing a gym

The term kickboxing covers many styles, so it pays to ask the gym which ruleset they teach. Dutch kickboxing is heavily influenced by Muay Thai and known for its hard low kicks and punch-kick combinations. K-1 rules allow knees but limit clinching. American kickboxing is more boxing-oriented with kicks above the waist.

Look for: a head coach with verifiable competitive or coaching credentials in their chosen ruleset, a genuine fundamentals class for beginners, padwork as a regular part of training (not just bag rounds), a clear sparring policy that protects new students, a mix of ages, genders, and skill levels, and a welcoming culture for hobbyists alongside competitors.

Red flags include classes that consist solely of high-intensity cardio without technique correction, instructors who cannot articulate which style they teach, gyms with no pad work, and grading systems that mirror karate-style belts without competitive lineage. In modern kickboxing, your credibility is built through pads, sparring, and the ring. Be cautious of facilities that market themselves more as fitness studios than as fight gyms, unless that is exactly what you want.

    Equipment you'll need

A solid kickboxing starter kit costs around 150 to 220 USD: hand wraps (two pairs), 14 or 16 oz boxing gloves for training and sparring, shin guards for kicking drills and sparring, a mouthguard, comfortable training shorts that allow full leg movement, and a skipping rope.

What NOT to buy yet: ankle braces, headgear (your gym usually provides it for early sparring), competition-weight gloves, or branded fight kit. Buy reliable basics from established brands and replace gloves once the padding compacts, usually after a year of regular use.

    Your first 30 days

In the first month you will learn stance, basic footwork, the jab and cross, the lead hook, the lead and rear roundhouse kick, the push kick or front kick, and how to check incoming kicks. You will spend significant time on heavy bags and pads, working combinations until they begin to feel natural. Defensive movement — slipping, parrying, and stepping off the line — is introduced early in good gyms.

Three sessions a week is a sustainable cadence for most beginners. Expect soreness in the shoulders, hips, and shins as your body adapts to the demands of throwing kicks repeatedly. Shin conditioning takes a few weeks of patient bag and pad work. There are no useful shortcuts.

Light technical sparring usually begins after several weeks once you can hold stance, throw basic combinations, and move without crossing your feet. Hard sparring is reserved for prepared and willing students.

    Common beginner mistakes

    • Pulling the chin up when punching. Keep it tucked.
    • Standing flat-footed. Stay light on the balls of your feet.
    • Throwing kicks without committing the hip. Rotation generates power.
    • Treating sparring like a real fight. Spar to learn, not to win.

How long until you can compete?

Kickboxing has accessible amateur pathways in most countries. Interclub events and beginner-level tournaments are often open after six to twelve months of consistent training. A full sanctioned amateur bout typically requires twelve to eighteen months of preparation, including supervised sparring and conditioning specific to fight rounds. The professional path varies by ruleset — Glory, K-1, and various national circuits have their own ranking systems. Most kickboxers compete amateur for several years before considering the professional route. The majority of practitioners train purely for fitness and skill, and never compete, which is a perfectly valid path.

Kickboxing rewards the athlete who shows up consistently, drills the basics, and respects training partners.

    Veelgestelde vragen
