Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling art focused on controlling an opponent on the ground and finishing fights with joint locks or chokes. Training BJJ feels less like a fight and more like a physical chess match. You and a partner trade positions, hunt for grips, and try to solve each other in real time. A typical class begins with a warm-up of movement drills, then a technique of the day demonstrated by the instructor, followed by drilling with a partner, and ending with rolling — BJJ's word for sparring. New students often leave the mat tired, humbled, and quietly addicted. The learning curve is steep but the community is generally one of the most welcoming in martial arts.

    Choosing a gym

BJJ gyms vary widely in quality and culture. The head instructor should be a verifiable black belt under a recognized lineage. Lineage matters in BJJ more than in most martial arts because the belt system is slow and tightly controlled.

Look for: a black belt head coach who actively teaches (not just hangs the certificate), a clear fundamentals or beginner curriculum, regular rolling at the end of class with supervision, a friendly atmosphere where higher belts help newer students rather than smashing them, women and older hobbyists training comfortably, and a free trial class.

Red flags include schools that promote belts quickly for fees, instructors who cannot or will not name their professor, and gyms where upper belts use beginners as target practice. Be cautious of any academy that has no visible competition presence yet promotes itself as elite. In BJJ, the mat tells the truth. A good gym has higher belts who roll hard with each other and gently with you.

    Equipment you'll need

BJJ has two formats: gi (with the traditional uniform, also called a kimono) and no-gi (rashguard and shorts). Most beginners start in the gi because it is technically richer and slows the pace, which helps learning.

A reasonable starter kit costs around 120 to 200 USD: one gi from a reputable brand in the correct size (A1, A2, etc.), a white belt (which usually comes with the gi), a rashguard for under the gi and for no-gi classes, grappling shorts without zippers, pockets, or metal, a mouthguard, and sandals for walking off the mat.

What NOT to buy yet: a second gi (one is fine for a few months), expensive competition gear, knee braces unless prescribed, or fancy patches. Wash your gi after every session. Hygiene is non-negotiable in grappling.

    Your first 30 days

In your first month you will learn how to fall safely, how to shrimp and bridge, basic guard retention, the closed guard, mount, side control, and a handful of escapes. You will probably learn one or two simple submissions like the rear naked choke and the armbar from guard. The volume of information feels overwhelming. It is supposed to. No one understands BJJ in the first month. Almost no one understands it in the first year.

Train two to four times a week. Three is sustainable for most adults with jobs and families. Your body will adapt within a few weeks — the neck soreness, finger stiffness, and general fatigue settle as your nervous system learns to relax under pressure.

Most gyms allow beginners to roll in their first or second week, but only with controlled partners. Use rolling to survive and breathe, not to win. Tap early and often. A tap is a reset, not a defeat.

    Common beginner mistakes

    • Using strength instead of technique. It works for a few weeks, then everyone catches up and you have no real skills.
    • Holding your breath when stuck in bad positions. Breathing keeps you calm and conserves energy.
    • Refusing to tap. Ego injuries end careers. Tap to anything tight.
    • Only drilling the techniques you like. Beginners need a balanced base. Specialize later.

How long until you can compete?

BJJ has the lowest barrier to competition of almost any martial art. Most local tournaments accept white belts after only a few months of training. Many gyms encourage beginners to compete early because tournaments accelerate learning. There is no professional path in the traditional sense for most BJJ practitioners — the sport rewards a lifetime of practice rather than a short pro career. The black belt typically takes ten to fifteen years of consistent training. The journey itself, not the belt, is the point.

BJJ rewards the patient and the curious. Show up, tap when you must, ask questions, and you will look back in a year amazed at how much your body and mind have changed.
