ប្រព័ន្ធខ្សែក្រវ៉ាត់តេក្វាន់ដូ៖ Gup Grades, Dan Ranks & Poomsae

ការណែនាំអំពីប្រព័ន្ធខ្សែក្រវាត់តេក្វាន់ដូ៖ ការវិវឌ្ឍន៍ 10 gup ទៅ 1 gup, 9 dan ranks, Kukkiwon vs ITF differences, poomsae, and breaking requirements.

Taekwondo is the world's most-practiced martial art, with tens of millions of students across more than 200 countries. Its belt system is among the most standardized in the martial arts — but "standardized" still leaves room for two major global organizations and dozens of national federations, each with its own syllabus.

    The gup grades

Taekwondo uses the term gup (sometimes romanized geup or kup) for pre-black-belt grades. Like judo's kyu, gup grades count downward: a beginner is typically 10th gup, working toward 1st gup, the rank immediately below black belt.

    A common Western progression is:

    • 10th gup: white belt
    • 9th gup: white belt with yellow stripe
    • 8th gup: yellow belt
    • 7th gup: yellow belt with green stripe
    • 6th gup: green belt
    • 5th gup: green belt with blue stripe
    • 4th gup: blue belt
    • 3rd gup: blue belt with red stripe
    • 2nd gup: red belt
    • 1st gup: red belt with black stripe ("black tip")

Not every school uses ten grades; some compress to eight or nine. The striped intermediate grades are a common Western adaptation that lets students test more frequently without inflating belt counts.

At each gup, students are assessed on poomsae (forms), kibon (basic techniques), kyorugi (sparring), and gyeokpa (breaking). The weighting depends on the school's lineage and the student's age.

    Kukkiwon (WT) vs ITF

Taekwondo's two largest organizations diverged in the 1970s and now operate as distinct branches of the art.

Kukkiwon, headquartered in Seoul, is the official world headquarters of taekwondo and the technical body behind World Taekwondo (WT), the federation that governs Olympic competition. Kukkiwon issues dan certificates recognized as the global standard for sport taekwondo. Its poomsae syllabus uses the Taegeuk series at gup grades and the Yudanja series (Koryo, Keumgang, Taebaek, Pyongwon, Sipjin, Jitae, Cheonkwon, Hansoo, Ilyeo) at dan grades. WT sparring is foot-heavy, points-based, and uses electronic scoring chest protectors.

ITF (International Taekwon-Do Federation) was founded by General Choi Hong Hi, taekwondo's principal early codifier. ITF uses a different poomsae set called tul (Chon-Ji, Dan-Gun, Do-San, and so on through to Tong-Il), permits more hand techniques in sparring, and uses a sine-wave movement principle absent from WT taekwondo. ITF has itself split into multiple federations over the decades, each claiming legitimacy.

Neither system is more authentic than the other. They are parallel branches with different technical priorities. If you plan to compete internationally or move between schools, knowing which lineage your dojang belongs to matters.

    The role of poomsae

Poomsae are taekwondo's pattern forms — choreographed sequences of techniques performed against imaginary opponents. Each gup grade introduces a new poomsae (Taegeuk Il-jang at 8th gup, Taegeuk Ee-jang at 7th gup, and so on), and dan grades introduce the Yudanja series. Poomsae are graded on stance accuracy, technical precision, rhythm, breath control, and intent. At higher grades, a sloppy poomsae will fail you regardless of how well you spar.

    Breaking requirements

Breaking — gyeokpa — is a distinctive feature of taekwondo grading. At lower gups, breaks are usually limited to a single board with a hand technique or basic kick. By 1st gup and the dan grades, multi-board breaks, jumping and spinning techniques, and speed breaks (where the target is held loosely or by a single finger) become standard. Breaking is partly a test of technique and partly a test of commitment — flinching, hesitating, or pulling power are easy to see.

    The 1st dan test

The first dan test in taekwondo typically includes the full gup-grade poomsae syllabus performed back to back, the first Yudanja poomsae (Koryo in Kukkiwon, Kwang-Gae in ITF), extensive kibon under fatigue, multiple rounds of kyorugi, a breaking sequence (often three to five techniques), and a written or oral component on terminology, history, and the tenets of taekwondo. In many schools the test runs three to six hours.

For children and younger teenagers, the first dan is often a poom (pronounced "pum") rank — a junior black belt — which converts to a full first dan when the student turns 15.

    Dan time-in-grade requirements

    Kukkiwon publishes formal time-in-grade requirements:

    • 1st to 2nd dan: 1 year
    • 2nd to 3rd dan: 2 years
    • 3rd to 4th dan: 3 years
    • 4th to 5th dan: 4 years
    • 5th to 6th dan: 5 years
    • 6th to 7th dan: 6 years
    • 7th to 8th dan: 8 years
    • 8th to 9th dan: 9 years

A practitioner who never missed a minimum could in theory reach 9th dan in around 38 years from first dan. In practice almost nobody does, because life, injury, and the increasing administrative weight of higher grades slow the climb. ITF time requirements are broadly similar.

The cultural meaning of belt colors

Taekwondo tradition assigns symbolic meaning to each belt color. White represents innocence and the beginner's empty mind. Yellow represents the earth in which a seed takes root. Green represents the plant growing toward the sky. Blue represents the sky itself, the direction of further growth. Red represents danger and the responsibility that comes with developing power. Black represents maturity, the union of all colors, and — as in judo — the beginning of serious study rather than its end.

The symbolism is rarely tested formally, but most serious dojangs teach it as part of the gup curriculum. It is one of the threads that connects modern competition-oriented taekwondo to its older Korean roots.
