    The Professional Fighters League, commonly known as PFL, is an American mixed martial arts promotion founded in 2017 and launched in its current format in 2018, headquartered in New York City. PFL is the only major MMA organization to use a sports-league model: every season consists of a regular season, playoffs, and a championship final, with fighters accumulating points based on wins, finishes, and the round in which those finishes occur. The season culminates in million-dollar championship purses awarded to one fighter in each weight class. Following its 2023 acquisition of Bellator MMA, PFL became the second-largest MMA organization in the world by roster size and broadcast footprint.

    History

    PFL traces its origins to the World Series of Fighting (WSOF), a promotion that ran from 2012 to 2017 and built a respectable roster of regional and former UFC talent. In 2017, the organization was rebranded as the Professional Fighters League under new ownership led by Donn Davis and Peter Murray, with a complete overhaul of the competitive format. The first PFL season launched in June 2018 with six weight classes, each awarding a $1 million prize to the season champion, an unprecedented payout structure for non-UFC MMA at the time.

    The core innovation was a points-based regular season. Each fighter competed twice during the regular season, earning three points for a win and bonus points for finishes, with extra points awarded for early finishes (three points for a first-round finish, two for the second round, one for the third). The top eight fighters in each weight class advanced to playoffs, contesting two single-night quarter-final and semi-final fights to reach the championship final.

    PFL expanded rapidly through several initiatives. The PFL Challenger Series, launched in 2022, gave prospects a televised pathway onto the main roster. PFL Europe debuted in 2023 with regional seasons in the United Kingdom, France, and Ireland, while PFL MENA launched the same year focusing on talent from the Middle East and North Africa. In November 2023, PFL acquired Bellator MMA from Paramount Global, consolidating the two largest non-UFC American promotions under one corporate roof.

    PFL contests its main season across seven weight classes (six men's and one women's), with the roster expanded after the Bellator acquisition:

    In the United States, PFL events broadcast on ESPN platforms, including ESPN, ESPN2, and the ESPN+ streaming service, with the partnership extended through multiple seasons. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, PFL is carried on Channel 4 and DAZN. Across continental Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, DAZN holds extensive rights and broadcasts the majority of PFL cards. In the Middle East and North Africa, PFL MENA events are typically distributed via MBC Action and DAZN. In Latin America, PFL cards have aired on Combate Global and ESPN platforms.
