Light heavyweight in MMA is contested at 205 pounds (93 kilograms) and has long been one of the UFC's marquee divisions, producing the largest concentration of all-time greats in the sport. The UFC, PFL, ONE Championship, Bellator (historically), and most major regional promotions run a light heavyweight division.
The UFC light heavyweight title's modern history begins with Tito Ortiz, who built a five-defense reign in the early 2000s. Chuck Liddell then dominated with four consecutive defenses on the way to becoming one of MMA's first true crossover stars. Rampage Jackson, Forrest Griffin, Lyoto Machida, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, and Jon Jones followed. Jones became the youngest UFC champion in history in 2011 and built a defining era at light heavyweight with eight consecutive title defenses (interrupted by title strippings and a stripped victory). Daniel Cormier, Jan Błachowicz, Glover Teixeira, Jiří Procházka, Jamahal Hill, Alex Pereira, and Magomed Ankalaev have all held the belt since. Pereira's run in 2024-2025 was historically dominant before Ankalaev took the title.
Outside the UFC, Bellator's light heavyweight division has been held by champions like Phil Davis, Ryan Bader, and Vadim Nemkov. ONE Championship's light heavyweight title (with hydration-tested limits at 224 lb) has been held by Reinier de Ridder and Anatoly Malykhin, the latter holding three different ONE belts simultaneously.
Notable record holders include Jon Jones, whose 11 successful title defenses across the official and interim title (8 official) and undefeated MMA record (with one disqualification loss) make him a consensus pick for greatest MMA fighter of all time. Daniel Cormier defended the title three times before vacating to focus on heavyweight, and Alex Pereira's combination of his Glory background and devastating leg kicks gave him one of the most exciting reigns in division history.
Light heavyweight is a striker's division with serious knockout rates. The 205-pound limit produces enough mass for one-shot finishes, and the historical talent pool has included many elite kickboxers and Muay Thai converts. Wrestlers can win the belt (Jones, Cormier, Ankalaev) but typically only with elite striking layered on top. Submission specialists are rare. Cardio matters less than at lighter classes because fights are often decided in three rounds rather than five.
Crossover to other rulesets is significant. UFC light heavyweight maps to ONE Championship's light heavyweight (224 lb) more by frame than by label, because ONE's hydration testing means fighters are closer to their actual walking weight. In boxing, 205 pounds sits between light heavyweight (175 lb) and cruiserweight (200 lb), so an MMA light heavyweight is closer in size to a boxing cruiserweight or even heavyweight (200+ lb). Many MMA light heavyweights have walking weights above 220 pounds.
