The head kick is the high roundhouse, delivered with the shin or instep to the temple, jaw, or neck. It operates from kicking range, the same distance as the body kick, but demands more hip flexibility, more commitment, and far more precise setup. Because the head is a small, mobile target that is usually guarded by both hands, a head kick that lands cleanly almost always ends the fight or visibly hurts the opponent. In stadium Muay Thai it is scored at the highest tier when it lands cleanly, although fighters rarely throw it cold, since the risk of being countered while one leg is overhead is severe.

Mechanically, the head kick is an extension of the body kick rather than a separate technique. The same step-off, the same full pivot of the support foot, the same hip rotation, and the same shin-as-whip principle all apply. What changes is the angle of the hip turn and the height of the swing. The kicker must rotate the hip slightly higher and lean further off the centerline so the shin can reach over the opponent's guard. The arm on the kicking side swings down hard to counterbalance the height of the leg, and the opposite hand stays welded to the temple.

The support leg does enormous work on a head kick. It must accept the entire bodyweight, pivot completely, and remain balanced even as the kicker reaches outside their base. Flexibility in the hips and hamstrings determines how high the kick can travel without compromising posture. Strong head kickers feel the kick coming from the floor, not the leg: the foot drives into the ground, the rotation travels up through the hip, and the shin is the last thing to arrive.

Tactically, the head kick is rarely the first strike of an exchange. It works best as a finisher inside a sequence that has already lifted or lowered the hands. Common setups include throwing low kicks repeatedly until the opponent drops the elbow, faking a teep or body kick to dip the hands, or following a jab-cross combination that walks the opponent backward onto a kick they cannot see. The southpaw-versus-orthodox matchup is especially fertile, since the rear-leg kick travels around the lead shoulder into the open jaw.

Common errors include throwing the kick cold without a setup, which lets the opponent simply block with the arm; failing to pivot the support foot fully, which leaves the kick short and slow; chambering the leg too high before extending, which telegraphs the strike; and dropping the opposite hand during the swing, which invites a counter cross.

Variations include the question-mark kick, which sells a low or body kick before snapping up; the switch kick, which loads the lead leg through a short step; and the spinning back kick or wheel kick, which is technically distinct but occupies the same tactical slot. Counters include leaning back so the kick passes in front of the chin, catching the leg and dumping the fighter, or stepping inside the arc and returning a cross to the exposed body.

The head kick is associated with Saenchai, whose creativity and flexibility make him one of the most prolific head kickers in the sport's history, and with Anderson Silva, whose Muay Thai education produced some of mixed martial arts' most famous head-kick knockouts. Among modern stadium fighters, Superlek Kiatmoo9 is celebrated for the speed and disguise of his left high kick.

هل spinning back kick نفس head kick؟
