The UFC does not have its own scoring system — its bouts are scored under the Unified Rules of MMA as adopted by the host athletic commission. In practice this means the 10-point must system, the same scoring framework used in professional boxing, applied to a sport that includes wrestling, grappling and submissions in addition to striking. Most controversial UFC scorecards come from this fit being awkward, not from judges getting numbers wrong.

    The 10-point must mechanics

Three judges sit at cageside and score each round independently. After every round, each judge must give the winner of the round 10 points. The loser usually receives 9, producing a 10-9 round. A round in which one fighter clearly dominates — multiple hard knockdowns, sustained ground-and-pound from top position, near-submissions that go unrewarded only because of the buzzer — should be scored 10-8. A round of extraordinary, lopsided dominance can be scored 10-7, although in practice this is extremely rare. Rounds can also be scored 10-10 when truly even, but the ABC has explicitly told judges this should be uncommon. A point deduction by the referee for a foul subtracts from the affected fighter's round score, so a fighter who wins a round but loses a point ends up at 9-9.

    The four judging criteria

Judges are instructed to score effective striking, effective grappling, effective aggression, and fighting-area control, in that order of priority. "Effective" is the operative word in all four. Damage matters more than volume: a fighter who lands 50 light jabs may lose a round to a fighter who lands 8 fight-altering shots. Effective grappling rewards takedowns that lead to top control or damage, submission attempts that genuinely threaten, and positional advances — not takedowns that are immediately reversed or scrambled out of. Effective aggression rewards moving forward with intent to finish; passive forward pressure does not count. Cage control is the lowest priority and is only meant to break otherwise even rounds.

    The takedown problem

The single most controversial scoring question in modern MMA is how to weight a takedown that produces no follow-up damage or position. The Unified Rules, as clarified by the ABC's judging criteria in recent years, say explicitly that a takedown is only valuable if it leads to advancing position, damage, or a credible submission threat. A fighter who shoots, lands the takedown, is immediately reversed and ends up on bottom should not be credited with the takedown. In practice, this guidance is inconsistently applied — some judges still reward the act of the takedown itself, which produces decisions that strikers and analysts complain about. Coaches now openly tell fighters not to attempt low-percentage takedowns that will be neutralised, because the modern guidance treats them as failed exchanges, not as scoring events.

    Why split decisions happen

Three judges, scoring three or five rounds, watching a fast sport from three different sides of the cage, frequently disagree on close rounds. A round in which one fighter lands more strikes but the other lands the harder strikes is genuinely ambiguous under the criteria. A round in which a fighter spends three minutes in top position without doing damage and then absorbs a 90-second comeback flurry can reasonably be scored either way. The system is designed to surface these disagreements rather than hide them.

    Championship and main-event scoring

Title fights and selected main events are five rounds rather than three, which dramatically changes pacing and strategy. A fighter can afford to lose round 1 to gas-gauge their opponent. The early rounds carry the same scoring weight as the late rounds, but fighters and coaches treat the later rounds as decisive because conditioning, accumulated damage and momentum compound. There is no specific bonus for the championship rounds in the scoring formula — a 10-9 in round 5 is worth the same as a 10-9 in round 1 — but the narrative weight is significant.

    Notable scoring controversies

The 2017 Unified Rules update was driven largely by accumulated complaints about scoring: the redefinition of "grounded opponent," clarified language on damage and effective striking, and explicit guidance that takedowns must be effective to score were direct responses to fights that fans, fighters and commissions agreed had been scored wrongly. More recently, the question of how to score championship rounds when one fighter is clearly hurt but defending, and how to weight late submission attempts that don't quite finish, continues to drive judge-training updates. The ABC publishes regular bulletins, and the major commissions run mandatory judge-training sessions.
